Hello Kitty Birthday Bake-Off Party

This Hello Kitty Bake-Off Party was a sweet day of creativity and the perfect way to celebrate my niece’s 10th birthday.

When I found myself out west for my niece’s birthday, I was thrilled to throw her a last-minute Hello Kitty Birthday Bake-Off Party. All the kids love baking shows, so we decided to do three bake-off rounds of treat decorating that all of the kids could participate in: (1) Cookies; (2) Cakes; and (3) Confections. We also made a larger Hello Kitty cake to celebrate the birthday girl, aside from our Bake-Off.

Party Setup: Before the party began, we set out muffin tins filled with various sprinkles and candies for the kids to use in their treat creations. We also prepared bags of white and pink frosting with different piping tips, edible black markers, edible glitter spray, fondant, and modeling chocolate in pink, black, white, and yellow.

I) Hello Kitty Cookies
We made adorable Hello Kitty sugar cookies. I used a fail-proof sugar cookie recipe and had them cooled and ready before the party started. Each child received a plate with one of each cookie to decorate as they wished.

II) Hello Kitty Cakes
Using Hello Kitty silicone molds, we baked small individual cakes for each kiddo. The day before, I crumb-coated all the cakes and stored them in the freezer. On the day of the party, I secured each cake to a small cake round with a bit of frosting, allowing the kids to decorate their Hello Kitty cakes on professional boards. They made great use of the frosting and fondant, and all the cakes turned out so cute!

III) Hello Kitty Confections
Since candies require multiple steps and can be a bit finicky, I prepped most of our confections almost to completion, but let the kids add the finishing touches with chocolate bows and edible markers. See below for the following confections: Hello Kitty Caramels, Hello Kitty Meow-Mallows, and Hello Kitty Oreos.

A) Hello Kitty Caramels
These caramels were so good and looked super professional – most people couldn’t believe that I made these myself!

  1. First, I painted small molds with pink and white chocolate and let them dry. I started with the pink bows, carefully painting just the bows, and then filled the rest of the mold with white chocolate.

  2. Next, I filled them with soft caramel. Here is my caramel recipe, but you can also purchase high-quality soft caramel instead. (No shade to the cubed caramels from the grocery store, but those won’t work; you should be able to easily squish the soft, creamy caramel.)

  3. Finally, I painted the back of the caramels with melted dark chocolate and let them dry. Once dry, you can pop them out and add accents with edible markers. Many kids found them too cute to decorate and opted to take them home or eat them right away.

B) Hello Kitty Meow-Mallows
These were my favorite treats we made—layers of marshmallow crème and chocolate cake, all enclosed in a thin chocolate shell. Some were fragile and cracked during the de-molding process, mainly because we didn’t have the time to let them set for long enough. Most of them survived and looked great. If you also find yourself short on time, you can put them in the fridge to help speed the setup process.

  1. First, I painted small molds with pink and white chocolate and let them dry. I started with the pink bows, carefully painted just the bows, and filled the rest of the mold with white chocolate.

  2. Next, I added a scoop of marshmallow crème, then topped it with a layer of chocolate cake.

  3. Finally, I painted the back of the treat with chocolate to seal it and let it dry. To avoid cracking during de-molding, chill thoroughly and make the chocolate shell sturdy with a few coats.

C) Hello Kitty Oreos
Although they’re a bit sweeter than I prefer, kids absolutely love them. The pink chocolate bows really completed the look.

  1. First, I made several chocolate pink bows using a silicone mold.

  2. Next, I lined the bottom of round molds with white chocolate and carefully pressed an Oreo into it, making sure it didn’t go all the way through.

  3. After that, I added more melted chocolate to the sides and top of the Oreo and tapped the tray to even out the chocolate.

  4. Once they dried, I de-molded them. We then let the kids decorate them by “gluing” the pink bows on with more melted chocolate and drawing faces using edible pens.

By the end of the Bake-Off, each kiddo had a full selection of gorgeous Hello Kitty treats to take home. All the kids had a great time – so much so that I overheard three separate kids say it was the best party they had ever been to!

IV) Hello Kitty Goodie Bags
You know I can’t resist a goodie bag! It’s like the inner poor kid in me who wanted endless goodies is now unleashed with adult money. These bags were so fun to put together, especially since it was the 50th anniversary of Hello Kitty. With only six girls attending, I might have gone a little overboard!

I purchased most of the goodies in person at Michaels (on sale) or the dollar store, so I don’t have links. However, I’ve included links to more goodie bag ideas under the Links to Party Supplies section below.

Here’s a list of what was included:

  • Hello Kitty Pez
  • Hello Kitty Popping Candy
  • Hello Kitty Cookie Crackers
  • Japanese Stickers
  • Hello Kitty Journals
  • Hello Kitty Pens
  • Hello Kitty Pouches
  • Bubble Wands
