Minecraft is all the rage right now with the kiddos in my life. Make your life easy by stealing all of these ideas for your next party.

With the launch of the Minecraft movie starring the brilliant Jack Black, it’s no wonder that a Minecraft Birthday Party has been a popular request for me lately. I first helped a friend plan her son’s Minecraft birthday party, which was such a hit that my own 7-year-old wanted the same theme for both his birthday and classroom party.

Through these celebrations, we’ve discovered some fantastic Minecraft party decorations, treats, goodies, and creative ideas.

Minecraft Birthday Party Decorations

I) Decor and Party Activities
Minecraft Parties are so fun to decorate. Once I started planning, the whole world looked like cubes and green opportunities for party decorations. Every cardboard box was suddenly an opportunity for a decoration or party game.

Our anchor decoration was a giant xreeper made out of a refrigerator box, Green Paper, and Green Tape. I just happened to get a new refrigerator for my garage the week before, and when I saw the box that it came in, I knew it was going to have a new life as a creeper. It came in two pieces, so the smaller box flipped on its side was the perfect creeper head to place on the larger “body” box. We wrapped it all in green paper and made a face out of black construction paper.

The other big showstopper decor was a creeper balloon wall. This came with so many balloons that we were able to cover two different walls with fun designs. Shout out to my poor mom, who spent a ton of time and elbow grease blowing them all up with this hand pump.

We also made a fun photo op backdrop with this green metallic fringe and a number “7” balloon. Then we stacked lots of these cool Minecraft boxes around that not only helped set the scene, but also allowed the kids to play with. I bought a few different kinds, such as small grass and dirt boxes (also good for goodie boxes), large grass and TNT boxes, creeper cubes, and brick cubes. But, if you have time, you could paint cardboard boxes too.

Fun Additions
We found these fun Minecraft wall decals to throw up in the kitchen. They are easy to pull off the wall and move, so these now live in my son’s room.

We used these Minecraft party kits that come with everything you need – tablecloths, plates, napkins, a banner, stickers, AND super cute Minecraft masks. I rounded it out with these fun Minecraft trays, and I found a bunch of extra green bowls, tongs, and tablecloths from the Dollar Store.

I also displayed all LEGO lollipops on these cute wooden stands (My son’s party was technically a “Lego Minecraft” party).

Minecraft Lego Challenge

I knew the kids would mostly just want to run around and play, but we did set up three different activities in case there was interest:

1) Lego Challenge
One party was technically a “Lego Minecraft” party because that’s what my son is really into these days. So, we incorporated the LEGO part into the party with a LEGO challenge activity. We placed out several different bins of LEGOs and told the kids that if they built a LEGO creation, they would earn a LEGO lollipop. I found these cute molds and had a fun time making the lollipops for this challenge. Check out the full Homemade Lollipops recipe here

2) Minecraft Art Challenge
For this challenge, we told the kids that if they created a piece of Minecraft art they would earn a Minecraft lollipop. I found some super cute cube lollipops that were perfect for the prize! There are both green and a variety pack.

3) Build Your Own Minecraft Candy Cube
We set up a candy bar with plastic cubes and LEGO boxes that our guests could fill with candy to take home. We also included a tall plastic container with red licorice that we taped a big “TNT” sign onto.

Minecraft Cake

II) Minecraft Cake
My son spent a lot of time looking through Pinterest to develop his vision for this cake. Ultimately, he landed on wanting a Minecraft scene with different terrains of cake and jello.

Minecraft Cake Details:

Flavor 1
Green and Brown Cake Side: I decided to make one side with chocolate cake and mint buttercream frosting for the classic green and brown blocks. I used Ina Garten’s chocolate cake recipe and my basic buttercream recipe flavored with a teaspoon of mint extract.

Flavor 2
Lava Ender World Cake Side: I made a funfetti cake with vanilla buttercream for the lava Ender World side of the cake. I used both rainbow and chocolate sprinkles to make this cake because I felt like it fit with the design better to have some brown flecks of color. I colored the buttercream red, orange, and dark purple/black to make the lava decorations. I used the recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction (my go-to baking guru).

Minecraft Cake Decorating
After baking the two cakes, I wrapped them in plastic and froze them solid. Then, I cut and stacked them into the desired block tower shapes, leaving space for the jello river to run between them. I then used my various buttercreams to decorate the blocky cake structures, leaving the sides bare to expose the fun cake flavors. Once the cake sides were frosted, I added the jello and held it in place with Rice Krispies treats that I “glued down” with buttercream.

Making the Jell-O River
I used blue Jell-O cubes for the lava between the two different cake worlds.

Fondant Additions
Once I had the cake decorated, I topped it all off with some fondant Minecraft characters I made ahead of time:

I made the popular creeper and Piggy cake topper with fondant. I also used a plastic Enderman toy for the lava side. And of course, we needed candles, so I topped it with a “7” Minecraft candle and some sparkler candles from the grocery store for extra flair.

Minecraft Cupcakes

III) Minecraft Cupcakes
We made some basic funfetti cupcakes and topped them with green and white swirled cream cheese frosting, green sprinkle mix, and a Minecraft ring. These character rings are always a huge hit with kids, and they make decorating the cupcakes a breeze. This is always my go-to hack when I’m short on time, but still want professional cupcakes for a kid’s birthday party.

How to Make Minecraft Creeper Cake Pops

IV) Minecraft Creeper Cake Pops
I’ve made a variety of cake pops in my day, however, this was my first time making Minecraft Creepers. These were a huge hit with all of the kids, were easy to transport, and also doubled as a great party table decoration. If you’re new to making cake pops, I highly recommend doing this design. Using our handy square mold made the process much easier. It was also nice to use the fondant cutter for a perfect execution.

Minecraft Creeper Cake Pop Instructions:

Step 1: Cake Pop Dough

  • To make the cake pop dough, I added a fresh funfetti cake to my mixing bowl, still hot and steaming. I mixed it with the paddle attachment until it came together into a dough. The steam added enough moisture that I did not need to use any frosting. You are looking for a dough-like consistency that will hold together, but not be too runny.

Step 2: Cake Pop Shaping

  • I used these molds to make cubes, pushing the dough in and flattening the top as much as possible. Then, I popped them into the freezer for a few hours so that I could pop them out while maintaining their form.

  • Once they were out of their molds, I let them sit for a bit to bring their temperature up. If the cake pops are too cold when you dip them, the chocolate will sweat and crack.

Step 3: Dipping

  • Melt your chocolate in the microwave or over a double boiler. I like to use a coffee mug to hold the chocolate because they are easy to handle, deep enough to dip, but not so wide that you waste chocolate with unnecessary surface area.

  • Dip your stick in the chocolate and then push it into the center of the cake pop. Let these dry before dipping.

  • Once the chocolate around the sticks is dry, dip the cake pop into the chocolate and lightly tap off the excess before placing it in the stand to dry. I have these cake pop stands, but if you don’t have one, you can use a cardboard box or Styrofoam to create a similar stand.

  • Once dry, you can add the creeper face with either edible markers or black fondant. I used this black fondant and the square fondant cutter to punch out perfect squares. I then glued them on with more melted chocolate.
Dirt Cube Cake Pops

V) Minecraft Cube Cake Pops

These turned out so good! I used small molds to paint green or brown chocolate cubes. Once they were dry, I layered marshmallow fluff and chocolate cake pop dough. Then I sealed it all up by covering the final side with more chocolate. Before the chocolate dried, I stuck in a cake pop stick. Let them dry overnight, and then carefully pop them out and avoid handling them too much so as not to smudge what should be a beautiful, shiny finish on the chocolate.

Cake Pop Dough:
For these, I mixed Costco chocolate muffins with a bit of buttercream until I had the desired texture. I used my square cutters to get an even set of mixture to pop into the molds.

I displayed them on these cute new stands.

Minecraft Mallomar Cubes

VI) Minecraft Mallomar Cubes

These are an elite dessert that your friends will rave about. This is a shell of chocolate surrounding a thick layer of marshmallow and chocolate cake. Not only is it delicious, but it looks just like the classic Minecraft cube with grass on top and dirt on the bottom.

Steps:

First, paint the bottom of molds with the green chocolate, smudging some of it up the sides a bit to get that desired look of grass growing down the sides. Once that dries, paint the rest of the mold with milk chocolate. I like to use these soft piping bags that allow me to smudge and paint the molds.

Allow the chocolate to fully dry, and then you can layer in a generous scoop of marshmallow fluff and a layer of chocolate cake.

For the cake, I cheated and used the giant Costco double chocolate muffins. I sliced them into the desired thickness and then used these square cookie cutters to make my cake inserts.

Then, seal the dessert by adding a final layer of chocolate to the exposed side of the cube. All of them to dry overnight so the chocolate has plenty of time to set.

Once dry, carefully pop them out of the mold. Try not to handle too much, or you will smudge the chocolate. I opted to use gloves to help protect that beautiful shine.

Minecraft Brownies

VII) Minecraft Brownie Blocks

As I’ve mentioned, we pulled this party together in one day. We focused on easy, fun treats. Since Minecraft mainly involved anything in cube form, I was able to add some cute Minecraft Brownie Blocks to our treat list. Who doesn’t love a brownie? They are the perfect one-bite treat.

  • After you’ve baked your favorite brownie recipe (I like Ghirardelli Ultimate Chocolate Premium Brownie Mix), weigh it down with a heavy pan so you get a flat top. I then used a square cutter to cut out some even cube shapes.

  • Then it’s all about presentation. You can stack them into a cute Minecraft setting and add your own decoration. I chose to add some of the Minecraft Creeper Cake Pops from above.

VIII) Minecraft Goodie Bags
I have now made three different Minecraft Goodie bags! I made one for my friend’s son’s birthday party, then one for my son’s birthday party, and then one for a school birthday party. So I feel like a bit of an expert on all of the fun things that are out there for Minecraft Goodie Bags. Below are videos showing all three versions, and links to all of the different goodies:
